Going Gray

I’ve been dying my hair since my early twenties. I’ve been a blond, redhead, brunette; have had highlights, lowlights, you name it. I think I’ve tried everything. For the last few years though, I’ve been struggling with hair texture and growing roots which recently have started to show as early as three weeks.

Last year my husband decided to shave his head because it was thinning and he just didn’t want to deal with it anymore. I remember asking him if he was sure he was ready such a drastic change and his reply has resonated with me since then. He said that it was time for him to become one with his oldness. Seems funny, I know but now I’m starting to understand and relate to what he meant.

I’ve decided to let my hair go gray and wanted you to join me on my journey. I hope to inspire others who’ve been thinking about it but are too afraid to commit to it. I’m about a month in from being hair dye-free. I started last month, August 2020. After doing extensive research and watched may YouTube videos, and here’s what I found.

There are a few options for going gray.

1. You can have it bleached and died silver, which according to my research is very expensive and damaging to your hair.

2. You can grow it out and have two-tone hair until you reach the desired length which could take up to two years depending on how fast your hair grows.

3. You can share your head and start over, a little too drastic for me.

4. Lastly, grow it out enough to get a cute short haircut and grow from there.

I decided to go with option 4. I plan to grow my hair out for 3-6 months and then cut it very short and start over. My hair is about three inches below my shoulders currently.

It’s hard to remember what my real hair color was or how much gray I currently have, however, I’m ready to embrace the real me.

I’m nervous but very excited. Below is a photo of my one-month outgrow. In the next post, I’ll have short hair. For those of you who are thinking about it, feel free to join me. We can empower and encourage each other along the way.
