Today was one of those days that reminds me why we fell in love with RV travel in the first place. It wasn’t just about the places we visited, it was about how those places made us feel.
We started our morning at the Ironton Park Nordic Trailhead. The valley was incredibly peaceful, surrounded by towering mountains that seemed to reach endlessly into the sky. The morning air was cool and fresh, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. It felt like the mountains were gently waking up, and we were lucky enough to witness it. Before the excitement of off-roading began, we stood there for a few quiet moments, simply taking it all in.
Then the real adventure started.
As we climbed toward Hurricane Pass, every mile seemed to bring an even more spectacular view. The higher we drove, the smaller everything below became. Looking out across the endless mountain peaks filled me with a mix of excitement and humility. It’s hard to describe the feeling of standing in a place so vast and beautiful. For a little while, all the worries of everyday life simply disappeared. There was nothing to think about except the mountains, the sky, and how incredibly lucky we were to be there.
If Hurricane Pass made us feel on top of the world, Corkscrew Gulch completely stole the show.
The bright yellow mountains were unlike anything I’ve ever seen. They almost looked unreal, glowing against the deep blue sky. Driving the narrow shelf roads definitely kept our hearts racing, and there were moments when I held my breath around the tighter turns. But every little bit of nervousness was rewarded with another unforgettable view. It was the perfect mix of adventure and beauty, the kind of experience that makes you smile long after it’s over.
By the time we reached the Red Mountain area, I couldn’t stop looking out the window. Every direction seemed more beautiful than the last. The colorful mountains told the story of this land’s mining history, and it was amazing to imagine everything these mountains have witnessed over the years.
One of my favorite memories from today wasn’t a mountain pass at all.
It was our picnic lunch at Gray Copper Gulch.
We found a quiet spot overlooking a peaceful alpine lake, unpacked our lunch, and simply sat together. The water reflected the mountains like a mirror, and the only sounds were the breeze and the occasional birdsong. There was no schedule, no rush, no distractions, just us, surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery we’ve ever experienced. Those simple moments always seem to become the ones I treasure the most.
As I left the trails, I realized how full my heart felt. Today wasn’t just about checking off famous trails or scenic overlooks. It was about sharing the adventure together, encouraging each other on the rough roads, laughing during the bumpy rides, and stopping often to appreciate just how incredible God’s creation is.
These mountains have a way of putting everything into perspective. They remind me how small we are, but also how blessed we are to experience places like this together.
Lastly, after an incredible morning of off-roading through the San Juan Mountains, we continued our adventure with a drive to the historic town of Silverton. The mountain views never seemed to end, and every mile reminded us why this area is so special.
Our first stop was the Colorado Basin Trail, where we spent time searching for rocks and crystal specimens. It felt like a real-life treasure hunt, and finding sparkling crystals tucked among the rocks made the hike even more memorable. Sometimes it’s the simple moments, slowing down, exploring, and appreciating nature, that become the best memories.
From there, we wandered through downtown Silverton, browsing the local shops, picking up a few souvenirs, and treating ourselves to some well-earned drinks. After a dusty day on the trails, it was the perfect way to relax and soak in the charm of this little mountain town.
As the sun began to set, we returned to our campsite for dinner. Sitting outside with a warm meal, surrounded by mountain views, was the perfect ending to an unforgettable day. Adventure, laughter, and time together, Day 2 couldn’t have been much better.
