Incorporating a Holistic Approach for a Better Quality of Life

I’ve lived with anxiety on and off for most of my life. For a time, I explored traditional avenues such as therapy and medication, but despite my efforts, the anxiety lingered. It wasn’t until I began embracing a more holistic approach to healing that I noticed a meaningful shift. Not only did my anxiety lessen, but I also began to feel more like myself, grounded, present, and whole.

At first, I didn’t fully realize what was happening. Slowly, I was opening myself to new practices that supported emotional balance, inner peace, and a more harmonious way of living. As an added benefit, my body began to feel different too, stronger, more relaxed, and more aligned. Yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and hypnotherapy became part of my routine. I also made space for prayer, explored different spiritual philosophies, and committed to daily journaling. My hope is that some of these practices may inspire positive change in your life as well.

Yoga
Initially, my perception of yoga was limited. I couldn’t understand how bending and twisting the body could improve either physical appearance or emotional well-being. One day, over coffee, a close friend shared how yoga had transformed her both physically and emotionally. Curious but admittedly intimidated by my lack of flexibility, I began practicing at home with a DVD. After just one session, I sensed there was something deeply meaningful about the practice, and I wanted to learn more.

Yoga is rooted in the belief that harmony comes from integrating the body, mind, and spirit. This balance is cultivated through movement, breath, and meditation. Yoga is said to improve circulation, stimulate internal organs, and support the body’s glandular system, often leading to improved overall health. At its core, yoga seeks to unite all aspects of the self to create balance, freedom, and a sense of inner peace. I currently practice yoga three times a week.

Meditation
Meditation is the practice of calming the mind through stillness, deep breathing, and relaxation of the body. Keeping the mind quiet, free from wandering thoughts, can be one of the most challenging aspects, yet with patience and consistency, it becomes more accessible. Meditation can reduce stress, increase energy, and improve emotional regulation. Over time, it enhances focus, creativity, and emotional resilience. I meditate daily and recommend starting with just 10 minutes a day, gradually increasing as you feel comfortable. Guided meditations via apps, recordings, or videos can be helpful, though the ultimate goal is learning to sit with yourself in silence.

Breathing Exercises
Conscious breathing is one of the most effective tools for stress relief. Intentional breathwork promotes deep relaxation and mental clarity. There are countless apps and online resources available to guide breathing practices. One of my favorites is pranayama breathing, which I incorporate into both my yoga and meditation routines. Breathing exercises can be practiced anytime, on their own or alongside other modalities.

Acupuncture
For many, the idea of needles can feel intimidating. Acupuncture involves the placement of very thin needles into specific points on the body to support energy flow and healing. While some people may feel mild discomfort, especially in more sensitive areas, many report profound therapeutic benefits. Acupuncture has been used to help treat anxiety, chronic pain, and migraines, among other conditions. I attend sessions every other week and have found them to be deeply restorative.

Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy uses guided verbal communication during a relaxed, focused state to help shift perceptions, thoughts, and behaviors. It can be beneficial for anxiety, stress, weight management, and addictive patterns. In many ways, it resembles meditation, but with the support of a trained professional. While I don’t practice hypnotherapy regularly, the sessions I’ve experienced have been surprisingly effective.

Prayer and Spiritual Exploration
Whether rooted in religion or personal spirituality, having a connection to something greater than ourselves can be profoundly grounding. Prayer offers me peace, hope, and a sense of trust in the unfolding of life. Faith, however one defines it, can foster wisdom, compassion, resilience, and growth. I encourage you to explore spiritual practices in a way that feels authentic to you.

Journaling
Journaling provides a safe space to release thoughts, process emotions, and gain clarity. Writing allows us to revisit experiences later with fresh perspective and deeper understanding. It can reduce stress, support emotional growth, and help identify patterns in thought and behavior. I’ve been journaling daily for eight years. Recently, I reread entries from 2006–2007, shortly after my divorce, and was struck by how much my life has evolved since then.

Adopting a holistic lifestyle has helped me create harmony across many areas of my life, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. While the journey is ongoing, these practices have brought me closer to balance, self-awareness, and a deeper sense of well-being.

  1. Reflection: “I believe the most pfowreul way to create our experiencesis through energy – connecting with the love within andattracting the most wonderful experiences unto ourselves. In this setting we are not creating our experiences throughthought, but through being. Based on the general principleof like attracts like, we are experiencing the highest stateof love and light and attracting similar types of energy to us.We are living life to the fullest—in the present moment – andallowing the universe to respond in kind. In such a setting,we come to view every experience through the eyes of thesoul – through loving eyes that see and feel everything, appreciate everything, with innocence and wonder.Over time, I have come to embrace this type of creating.Rather than envisioning a specific future for myself, I engagein activities that quiet my mind and allow me to feel the loveof spirit. In these circumstances I am creating through myunion with God. I am trusting in the universe – in the divineenergy that flourishes in a setting of stillness and peace – asI fully surrender.” -George Sifri
